In a patch that came just before Cataclysm there were some major talent tree changes for mages. One of the changes that has had a great impact on PvP is that in the Frost specialization you can now get the water elemental minion at level 10. This talent tree has no benefit in PvP as it does very little damage and has no mobility benefits or instant cast offensive spells. Still this fits into the PvP world in that there is the misconception that minions and pets make a better PvP class. This is not the case however, Hunters are good at PvP as they are the class that has the most ranged instant casts and the option to have any type of pet they can tame. There are so many options for hunters and they can get pets that have croud control abilities, Damage over time effects and many other types of attacks and effects that benefit in PvP. Warlocks are the class with the most Damage over time effects. This allows them to toss a single curse or bane on a target for a stealthy killing blow or assist with little effort. A warlock can also stack damage over time effects on a target, Single them out and use an ability that can benefit the warlock that can be more powerful with several debuffs affecting a target. Warlocks have very little choice between their pets and there is only one minion that is useful in PvP. As a Frost mage you have only the instant casts that you can get from the trainer and they do not benefit from the Frost tree. You also have no damage over time effects and your pet does little to no damage and has very low health. In Arcane you have a powerful instant cast native to your tree, mobility buffs, silencing effects and even the Presence of Mind talent spell that turns your next spell into an instant cast. Arcane is the only PvP specialization for mages and I am finally done my rant.

OMFG PVP!
I recently found a love for Player vs Player gaming in World of Warcraft and I can really "Pwn teh noobz" as an Arcane specialization Mage. I used to be very good at my hunter before the expansion pack for Cataclysm was released. Now I cant even go into battle in Player vs. Player anymore because he is capped at 80 until I have the money for the expansion. Blizzard really knows how to make you think that you have to buy the next version of the game. Every time I go in to Player vs. Player on my hunter I get royally ganked by anyone that has any Cataclysm gear. I didnt exactly twink out my hunter as I prefer to play a caster and i only capped it so that I could be able to tell myself that i spent the time to cap a toon. After that I immediately logged out and made a new main. I decided that I wanted to make a PvP mage as I never used to PvP as my first mage that I made a long time ago.
